I just got their new EP "Dume" on Thrill Jockey...

Does anyone else prefer Robot Nicola, to Punk Rock Nicola?

I just don't think Nicola's bratty vocal stylings, Adult.'s newer "punk rock" attitude, or all the electric guitar suit them very well. I wasn't very fond of "Anxiety Always" either, I was hoping they'd get past this current phase. Still hoping.

New Adult. Update!

Hello.
Our apologizes for such a long time between updates. But the truth is, it maybe just as long until the next update here at ersatzaudio.com. Why you might ask? Well, allow us to explain.

For those of you who don't know - Ersatz Audio is run by a staff of 2
humans. We are Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus, we are also in the band ADULT. We have been running Ersatz Audio since 1995 (that's 10 years!) we have also been in the band ADULT. since 1998 (that's 7 years!). As of late, we have found it VERY demanding to be both label heads and band members.

So, we have decided to take a break from the label for a little while (and no, we are not interested in getting employees to run Ersatz Audio but thanks for asking) . This does not mean Ersatz Audio is over, far from it, and we will still be running/maintaining the MAILORDER section of this site for example. It just means that we are taking a much needed break from Ersatz Audio after 10 years to concentrate on ADULT.

So what does this mean for ADULT. A LOT. ADULT. have a new 6 song ep entitled D.U.M.E. coming out this spring on the fantastic and equally independent Chicago label THRILL JOCKEY!

So what's up with ADULT. you ask?
Well, as you might already know, we also run our
own label Ersatz Audio. We had 6 new releases
on the label this Spring and that took up most
of our time from January until yesterday. But now
everything is basically done with that for a while,
and that means we get to take off our label hats
and go back to ADULT. We will start working on
our next album soon. It won't be ready for a LONG
time, but at least we are now able to start on it.
So we'll keep you posted on that.

Info on the ADULT. / THE DIRTBOMBS 7" can be
found at www.ersatzaudio.com in the discography
section.

Added a few photos to the site in the LIVE, FROM YOU
and MISC sections, plus a few minor updates.

And just in case you missed it, Nicola Kuperus has

This is the response :

Interesting. We received your other email, but have been very busy, plus
hadn't figured out how to reply to your last email. But I guess the last
email is a mute point now that you like the way we used the guitar. I thank
you for your enthusiasm and would still like to say this about your last
email:

It is a weird thing to be in a band with a history and fans (never had that
before). We have always enjoyed the fact that ADULT. has never given people
exactly what they might expect: first with the vocals (odd in electronic
music in 1997), then with the bass guitar, and then with the harder stuff on
ANXIETY ALWAYS, and all of these things gained and lost different fans over
the years. But these are not things we do because of anything external,
these are things that are inside us and just come out. So if we didn't go
in these directions, we wouldn't be true to ourselves.

And this is the beauty of the UNDERGROUND to us.

If we weren't independent or underground, we would be on a MAJOR, and a
major might just say exactly what you said in your previous email but in a
different way, "Don't add guitars. You've gotten this far without guitars,
don't risk it. Your popularity keeps increasing... let's just repeat the
last album and not take any chances... you wouldn't want to lose any fans,
or sales would you?"

And this is interesting in regards to your comment: "I understand staying
underground does not pay the bills." I have to reply that, no, you don't
understand this. We HAVE and DO pay our bills being underground, we aren't
rich and we drive shit cars, but we do pay our bills being underground as
you say. I haven't had to work for "the man" in 5 years. So thoughts
COMPLETELY opposite of yours go through our heads. We don't think, "Let's
add guitars, that will make us rich." We think, "Really like the sound of
the guitar right now. Let's write some songs with it... but what if all our
fans hate it and ADULT. fades away because of the guitar and we have to go
back and get regular jobs? Well, that is the risk we will have to take
because we have to be true to ourselves." And the guitar in this example
can be exchanged with many different concepts, i.e., vocals, bass guitar,
etc. And in the grand scope of this, we like to think that is why people
like us (because we stay true to ourselves and make 'genuine' music), not
just because of the instrument we use.

We can't censor what we do, and if we want to play around with the guitar
for awhile, then we will. Maybe we'll write 2 new songs with it and be
done, or maybe there will be guitar in every song we ever write from this
day forward, we don't know. But the important thing is that we listen to
OUR internal voice and be true to that. To us, that is what it is to be
underground. Not like some Jessica Simpson mass marketed product who has no
will or desires of their, take no risks and just do what others tell her to
do.

I just want to make sure you realize that the tone of this email is not
negative or an attack at you, I think you have valid points, I just wanted
you to know that we do think about things like this, and thought you
deserved a good reply.
