The first part with the arrows is an email a friend sent asking why they decided to go a more guitar route on there new songs.

Interesting. We received your other email, but have been very busy, plus
hadn't figured out how to reply to your last email. But I guess the last
email is a mute point now that you like the way we used the guitar. I thank
you for your enthusiasm and would still like to say this about your last
email:

It is a weird thing to be in a band with a history and fans (never had that
before). We have always enjoyed the fact that ADULT. has never given people
exactly what they might expect: first with the vocals (odd in electronic
music in 1997), then with the bass guitar, and then with the harder stuff on
ANXIETY ALWAYS, and all of these things gained and lost different fans over
the years. But these are not things we do because of anything external,
these are things that are inside us and just come out. So if we didn't go
in these directions, we wouldn't be true to ourselves.

And this is the beauty of the UNDERGROUND to us.

If we weren't independent or underground, we would be on a MAJOR, and a
major might just say exactly what you said in your previous email but in a
different way, "Don't add guitars. You've gotten this far without guitars,
don't risk it. Your popularity keeps increasing... let's just repeat the
last album and not take any chances... you wouldn't want to lose any fans,
or sales would you?"

And this is interesting in regards to your comment: "I understand staying
underground does not pay the bills." I have to reply that, no, you don't
understand this. We HAVE and DO pay our bills being underground, we aren't
rich and we drive shit cars, but we do pay our bills being underground as
you say. I haven't had to work for "the man" in 5 years. So thoughts
COMPLETELY opposite of yours go through our heads. We don't think, "Let's
add guitars, that will make us rich." We think, "Really like the sound of
the guitar right now. Let's write some songs with it... but what if all our
fans hate it and ADULT. fades away because of the guitar and we have to go
back and get regular jobs? Well, that is the risk we will have to take
because we have to be true to ourselves." And the guitar in this example
can be exchanged with many different concepts, i.e., vocals, bass guitar,
etc. And in the grand scope of this, we like to think that is why people
like us (because we stay true to ourselves and make 'genuine' music), not
just because of the instrument we use.

We can't censor what we do, and if we want to play around with the guitar
for awhile, then we will. Maybe we'll write 2 new songs with it and be
done, or maybe there will be guitar in every song we ever write from this
day forward, we don't know. But the important thing is that we listen to
OUR internal voice and be true to that. To us, that is what it is to be
underground. Not like some Jessica Simpson mass marketed product who has no
will or desires of their, take no risks and just do what others tell her to
do.

I just want to make sure you realize that the tone of this email is not
negative or an attack at you, I think you have valid points, I just wanted
you to know that we do think about things like this, and thought you
deserved a good reply.
